Parent Strategies: Finding Your Thing

Families, it’s so important to find your thing. Check out this message from our CEO, Dr. Marcy Willard…

I was listening to this tune (lyrics below) in my yard last weekend. I was really struck by how emotional I got as I sat there.

I kept tearing up, and I felt the need to play the song over and over again. I sat and looked up at the blue sky overhead in my porch swing. Why was this so emotional for me?

Well, a couple things.

First of all, I love a porch swing. I. Just. Love. It.

I realized it had been so long since I had been out there. Even getting the swing took me many years. Why? I could afford a porch swing…it cost me no more than a nice dinner out or a new outfit for work.

Why wait years to get one? I realized it was my own failure to put important things at the top of my list. Moms often do this. We simply forget what we need. Now, I am a weirdo so you might not need a porch swing to relax. In my family, rocking chairs and swings are big. In your family, what brings you comfort? What makes you feel like a kid again? Well, whatever it is, make sure to squeeze some of that into your life again.

The other thing that I simply love is my music.

As I rocked outside one of my favorite old songs came on from the Kinks. The song, you can see below, talks about better days ahead. Sometimes we need a reminder of this. Nothing lasts forever. Sometimes, like in COVID, it lasts a very long time. But no matter what it is, I believe, as he says in this song, “better things are on their way.”

For my music, I had thankfully bothered to make myself a mix of my favorite tunes. Remember in the old days when you used to make a mix CD or a mix tape? There’s so much joy in that. I made myself a list on Spotify. Hearing all my favorites play, for myself, by myself, in the comfort of my backyard and my favorite porch swing… bliss!

Again, I am a weirdo so listening to a music mix might not be the lift you need. Maybe you love to dance. Maybe you love working out. Maybe you like knitting or painting or gardening. Whatever it is: DO IT.

And in all things, You rock! You’ve got this! We are here for you!

Stay well and healthy,

Dr. Marcy Willard

P.S. Here are the lyrics.

Better Things by The Kinks

Here’s wishing you the bluest sky

And hoping something better comes tomorrow

Hoping all the verses rhyme

And the very best of choruses, too

Follow all the doubt and sadness

I know that better things are on the way

Here’s hoping all the days ahead

Won’t be as bitter as the ones behind you

Be an optimist instead

And somehow happiness will find you

Forget what happened yesterday

I know that better things are on the way

It’s really good to see you rocking out

And having fun

Living like you’ve just begun

Accept your life and what it brings

I hope tomorrow you’ll find better things

I know tomorrow you’ll find better things…
